UNIC Professor Dr Loizos Loizou appointed Ambassador for Children with Cancer and Leukaemia

Dr Loizos Loizou, Clinical Professor of Paediatrics, Paediatric Oncology/Haematology/Immunology at the University of Nicosia Medical School, has been honoured as an Ambassador for Children with Cancer and Leukaemia by the International Society of Paediatric Oncology.

Ambassadors are chosen from distinguished paediatric oncologists with extensive experience. Professor Loizou, the founder of Paediatric Oncology in Cyprus since 1990, led the creation of essential services for children with cancer in Cyprus, establishing the Paediatric Oncology Department at Archbishop Makarios III Hospital in Nicosia. This infrastructure provided comprehensive management and treatments for children with cancer and leukaemia in Cyprus. Despite starting this effort only in 1990, Cyprus now ranks among the top countries worldwide with an 82% cure rate for children with cancer.

Along with his actions in Cyprus, Professor Loizou has developed extensive cooperation with developing countries in collaboration with France (Groupe Franco-Africain d’Oncologie Pédiatrique) to provide support, treatments and expertise to 24 Pediatric Oncology centres located in 18 French-speaking countries in Africa, particularly Sub-Saharan Africa.

Professor Loizou collaborates with the World Health Organisation to reduce global inequalities in cancer treatment for children. In developing countries, where 80% of children with cancer live, cure rates are below 20%, while in developed countries, they exceed 80%. These disparities are unacceptable and need urgent action.

Prof Loizou expressed that this honorary title and new role deeply move him and give him the strength to continue his work with cancer and leukaemia in Cyprus, and in other countries with significant needs.
