Government announces new plans for Larnaca port and marina

The government’s plans to restart the Larnaca marina and port project were presented by Transport, Communications and Works Minister Alexis Vafeades at a press conference.

The minister said there had been a discussion with the town’s stakeholders over how to start implementing the project, and they decided the following:

First: Separate the marina from the port.

Implement the following projects by priority:

  • Maintain and upgrade the existing marina
  • Establish a nautical club
  • Create a green area and park

The plan, at a later stage, is to expand both the port and marina, after exploring local and international investor interest.

The timeframes

  • Works to maintain and upgrade the marina to be completed by September 2026
  • Nautical club to be built by December 2027
  • Green area to be completed by September 2027
  • Total cost in the range of €25-30 million plus VAT

Vafeades said the works are set to upgrade Larnaca’s tourism product.

The project to develop Larnaca port and marina will be carried out through a public-private partnership. The aim is to transform the port into a primary cruise port and the marina into a key tourist attraction.

At the same time, the combination of residential and commercial development in the area within the port and marina can provide the necessary revenue to make infrastructure investment sustainable. The land development is combined with extensive waterfront landscaping, providing public access to spaces within the marina.

“The immediate projects that will put the development of the port and marina back on track, up to and including the final decisions on the future of the project, were discussed on July 10, 2024 in a meeting we had with the ad hoc committee of the city and province of Larnaca, which was established to participate in discussions on the development of the city's port and marina,” Vafeades said.

Beyond the works on the port and marina, the plans also include:

  • Implementation of the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan at a cost of approximately €18m. With a completion horizon of 2026, tenders have already been opened.
  • Study by the Ministry of Interior of the possibility of accelerating the study and construction for the extension of Panagouli Avenue which will allow the faster development of the northern part of Larnaca.
