GOLD New Issue: In the Interest of Justice

In the new issue of GOLD, coming out on Sunday 18 August, University of Nicosia presents: In the Interest of Justice

In early 2024, Cyprus' legal industry faced another significant setback when the €6 million e-justice system, intended to streamline court procedures and reduce delays, failed to launch successfully. The system's servers crashed shortly after going live, prompting the Supreme Court to revert to the i-justice system as a temporary solution. This setback is just one of many challenges confronting the legal sector, which has been grappling with pressures since the 2013 financial crisis with subsequent issues like the reputational damage caused by the Cyprus Investment Programme’s ‘golden passports’ scandal, the COVID-19 pandemic, sanctions on Russia and tensions in the Middle East. Although not all firms were equally affected many are now diversifying into specialised areas like technology, with alternative dispute resolution (ADR) also on the rise due to increased M&A activity. A question looms: will the squeeze for niche markets trigger a wave of mergers as smaller firms struggle to stay afloat? As the industry navigates these turbulent waters, it seems that the need for real progress and strategic rebranding has become increasingly urgent.

In this month’s cover story, partners of 11 local law firms, along with CBA President Michael Vorkas and Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis, discuss the current state of the legal industry in Cyprus. In addition, Savvas Papasavvas, Vice President of the EU General Court, reflects on his legal journey and the mounting threats to the rule of law, Yiannos Georgiades, President of the Global Law and Business Organisation (GLAWBUS), discusses bridging the gap between lawyers, businesspeople and entrepreneurs, while lawyer Alexia Kountouri explains why she co-founded the Justice For All programme. Meanwhile, four successful business executives, who either studied law or briefly practised the profession before moving on, explain how “thinking like a lawyer” has positively impacted their professional and personal growth.

Finally, in keeping with a longstanding GOLD tradition, we have updated our list of the island’s 90+leading law firms, ranked by the number of lawyers they employ in Cyprus. As always, we acknowledge that the list is not exhaustive but highlights those firms that are recognised as making a significant impact.
