National Council to convene on 13 September

The National Council, the top advisory body to the President on the handling of the question of Cyprus, will convene on 13 September, under President Nikos Christodoulides.

Government Spokesman, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, told CNA that during the meeting, there will be a briefing and exchange of views between the political leadership, in view of President Christodoulides’ trip to New York for the UN General Assembly. Regional developments will also be discussed, he said.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended conclusively.
