July 2024 the warmest in Cyprus' climatological history

This July was the warmest month of July in the climatological history of Cyprus, with the sole exception of the mountainous areas, the Department of Meteorology has said.

A press release noted that the main parametre that contributed to this record was that many warm nights were recorded during the month.

According to the data, July saw a record of nights with daily minimum temperatures at levels above the yellow risk level for extreme minimum temperatures.

According to statistics published by the Department of Meteorology on 21 August, the Athalassa station recorded a total of 16 days during which there was a warning in effect for extreme maximum temperature, ranking it in 3rd place after 2020, when there were a total of 20 days with a warning and 2021 and 2023, when there were a total of 18 days with a warning.

Also, the Athalassa Station recorded the second record for consecutive days with a warning in effect, with a total of 10 consecutive days, after 2023 when a record of 16 consecutive days with warnings in effect was recorded.

However, in terms of daily minimum temperatures, July 2024 ranks 1st, with a total of 13 nights in which there was an extreme minimum temperature warning in effect, followed by 1988 and 2000 with 10 nights and 2009 with 9 nights with a warning in effect.

Regarding the number of consecutive nights with an extreme minimum temperature warning in place, July 2024 ranks 4th with 4 consecutive nights, with 2009 ranking 1st with 9 consecutive nights.

As regards tge station at Larnaca airport, according to the Department of Meteorology, in July 2024, 14 nights with a minimum temperature warning in effect were recorded, followed by July 2023 with 10 such nights. In addition, 4 consecutive nights with a warning in effect were recorded, a number which ranks July 2024 in the 2nd place, after July 2023 (5 consecutive nights with a warning in effect).

Finally, as regards the station at Paphos airport, the Department of Meteorology reports that this July ranks first in terms of the total number of nights with a warning in effect, with 14 nights, double the last record of July 2023 and 2021, while a record of 6 consecutive nights with a warning in effect was also recorded.
