Financial literacy lesson introduced in formal curriculum

The Ministry of Education has introduced a financial literacy programme into the formal education curriculum of schools across Cyprus.

The Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC), which has long pushed for the lesson’s inclusion in the curriculum, said the initiative “marks a significant step towards empowering students with essential financial knowledge and skills”.

It added, “CySEC is proud to be a key partner in the broader effort, working within the framework of the Cyprus Financial Literacy and Education Committee (CyFLEC) to make financial education accessible to all students in Cyprus”.

CySEC has repeatedly emphasised the need for a financial literacy course in schools, underscoring the importance of equipping students with the financial knowledge and skills necessary for their future.

According to the Ministry of Education, "From the new school year, the financial literacy programme will be a structured part of the curriculum for third-grade gymnasium students. This programme is scheduled to be held over six teaching periods – three in the first quarter and three in the second quarter of the school year. The primary aim of this initiative is to enable youngsters to acquire the necessary financial skills to manage their personal or family finances."
