Eurostat: Share of doctor and dentist graduates in Cyprus comparable to EU average

The shares of doctors and dentists per 100,000 inhabitants who graduated in 2022 in Cyprus were comparable to the average across the European Union, according to data released by Eurostat.

In 2022, 69,279 medical doctors graduated in the EU which, in relative terms, corresponded to 15.5 medical doctor graduates for every 100,000 inhabitants. This represents a slight decrease compared with the 2021 ratio of 15.7 medical doctor graduates per 100,000 inhabitants.

The rate for Cyprus in 2022 stood at 15.1 medical doctors graduating per 100,000 inhabitants, which was a significant increase compared to 2021 (11.0 per 100,000).

The highest rates among EU member states were recorded in Bulgaria (29.5 per 100,000 inhabitants), Malta (27.7) and Latvia (27.5).

At the other end of the scale, Slovenia had the lowest rate at 11.4 per 100,000 inhabitants, almost a third of the rate in Bulgaria. Slovenia was followed by Estonia (12.2) and Germany (12.4).

Regarding dentists, in 2022 there were 14,313 graduates in the EU, representing 3.2 dentist graduates per 100,000 inhabitants. The number represents a slight increase, up from 3.1 in 2021.

In Cyprus, the rate of dentist graduates stood at 3.6 persons per 100,000 inhabitants. The data shows zero dentist graduates in Cyprus in 2021.

Among all member states, Romania had the highest rate with 9.9 per 100,000 inhabitants, ahead of Portugal (9.1) and Bulgaria (7.8).

By contrast, Malta (less than 0.1), Italy (1.4) and the Netherlands (1.5) reported the lowest rates, all below 1.5 dentist graduates per 100,000 inhabitants.
