Electoral register will see some 85,000 additional voters if legislation changes

About 85,000 citizens over 18 years of age, are not registered in the electoral rolls and meet the criteria for automatic registration and if the legislation changes they will be automatically added on the rolls.

Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry, Elikkos Elia, revealed the information to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

He further said that a number of 6,900 people between the ages of 17-18, could be on the register if a new law is introduced giving them the right to vote at 17 years of age.

The Permanent Secretary said that the debate should not be whether a 17 year old is mature enough to vote but rather to cultivate a political consciousness of how important it is to exercise your right to vote and the value and importance of choosing the people who will shape our future.

Elia said that soon the Ministry will provide additional information on the exact numbers of voters on the register in case the legislation changes.

Replying to a question Elia said that since the mandatory voting was abolished and registration in the electoral roll will be automatic, there is no reason to have a voter ID card and therefore money from the taxpayers will be saved because the authorities will not issue it.
