GOLD New Issue - Women in Tech: Breaking down barriers and battling stereotypes in Cyprus

In the new issue of GOLD, available on newsstands from Sunday, 15 September, we feature 18 women in technical roles who share their professional journeys in today’s tech-driven world.

The tech sector in Cyprus has experienced substantial growth in recent years, suggesting a promising future for increased female participation. However, according to the latest European Commission report (2023), only 32.8% of the workforce in high-tech industries across the EU are women, highlighting their underrepresentation. The majority of roles occupied by women are supportive and, specifically, only 19% of women in the EU tech sector hold executive positions. Some 35% of managerial roles are taken by women, who occupy 41% of professional roles and a striking 61% of support roles.

Turning our gaze to Cyprus, according to the 2023 Gender Equality Index, despite the arrival of numerous international ICT companies that have created a wealth of new jobs and enriched the island's tech ecosystem, women constitute only 26% of university graduates in tech, while men comprise 74%. This imbalance highlights a pressing need to change long-held perceptions of those fields of study that are viewed as “less suitable” for girls and to bridge the gender gap in a sector that is otherwise a beacon of progress and innovation. This month’s cover story features 18 inspiring women who are making strides in Cyprus' tech industry.

They all hold significant technical roles in some of the country’s most prominent tech companies.
