MED9 Ministerial Meeting on Energy to take place in Cyprus
07:05 - 21 September 2024
Cyprus, as the presiding country of the MED9 informal cooperation for 2024, will host the 2nd MED9 Ministerial Meeting on Energy next Monday, 23 September.
The aim of the meeting is to boost energy cooperation between the EU’s nine Mediterranean member states, especially in their effort to transform the Mediterranean region into a hub for green energy transfer.
The meeting will take place at Radisson Blu hotel in Larnaca, from 9am until 3pm, and will be chaired by the Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, George Papanastasiou. It will be joined by the Ministers – or their representatives – of France, Greece, Italy, Spain, Croatia, Malta, Portugal and Slovenia, as well as representatives of the European Commission and International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).
The agenda will be divided into three parts. In the first part, the MED9 Energy Ministers will exchange views on creating a hub in the Mediterranean to transfer green energy between European and third countries, which in turn will help them reach their energy targets, ensure energy security, and promote peace and stability in the broader region.
Over the second part, the MED9 ministers will explore potential synergies in authorising cross-border green projects, which is a key requirement for the countries’ vision to create an energy hub in the Mediterranean.
A group photo will be taken of the MED9 delegates at 12.15pm, followed by a joint press conference, during which Mr Papanastasiou will present the Joint Declaration of the MED9 Energy Ministers.
The MED9 Ministerial Meeting on Energy will wrap with a working lunch, during which ministers will discuss the need to create a policy framework for offshore RES technologies, such as wind turbines, floating photovoltaics and wave energy.
