The car brands that buyers prefer - Registrations on the up

The car market is continuing its upward momentum, with the first eight months of the year living up to the expectations of dealerships and others involved in the market.
In the first eight months of 2024, passenger saloon car registrations rose by 13.1% to 26,902 compared to 23,777 in the same period last year.
About six out of ten registrations are still for used saloon cars compared to new ones, which account for more than 40%.
The increase in the market share of electric cars, which reached 3.3% in the period January - August 2024 against 2.4% in the corresponding period of 2023 has been subtler, while hybrids continue to gain ground, with registrations occupying 36.8% of the market up from 27.5% in the corresponding period last year.
On the other hand, the share of gasoline-powered saloon cars fell to 50.1% compared to 59.8% in the corresponding period of 2023, as did the share of diesel-powered cars, which decreased to 9.9% compared to 10.2%.
Overall passenger car saloon market
There were 26,902 passenger saloon car registrations in the period January – August 2024, of which 23,550 were private passenger saloons.
Toyota remains at the top with 4,693 registrations, followed by Mazda with 3,141. Nissan counts 2,517 registrations in total saloon car registrations, Kia 1,811, while the top five is completed by Mercedes, with 1,515 registrations.
The relevant list also includes the registrations of BMW (1,405), Hyundai (1,072), Volkswagen (1,304), Honda (695) and Land Rover (600).
New saloon passenger cars
40.8% of saloon passenger cars in the first eight months of 2024 were new, with registrations reaching 10,963, of which 9,783 were private cars.
In this category, Kia remained first, with 1,729 registrations, followed by Nissan (1,117), Volkswagen (1,045) and Hyundai (1,003), with Toyota (991) completing the top five registrations.
Popular market brands such as BMW (513), Mercedes (422), Audi (362), Skoda (256) and Renault (236) are ranked in the rest of the relevant list.
Used saloon passenger cars
Almost six in ten passenger saloon cars registered in the first eight months of 2024 were used cars, with registrations totaling 15,939, of which 13,767 were for private cars.
Toyota remains at the top, with 3,702 registrations, followed by Mazda (3,053), Nissan (1,400), Mercedes (1,093) and BMW (892) completes the top five.
The list of used saloon car registrations also includes Honda (595), Land Rover (369), Suzuki (323), Volkswagen (259) and Lexus (243).
