A spotlight on mobile telephony: The market shares and fluctuations in provider rates

The total number of mobile users increased by 32,858 users in one year in the first half of 2024, with subscribers outnumbering prepaid mobile users with a gap that grew by 1.1%.

Contracts with unlimited data, calls and SMS make up 57.1% of contracted subscriptions and are expected to continue to grow in number.

In terms of mobile operator market shares, there were ups and downs, with Cyta maintaining the lead and Cablenet posting double-digit percentages across all categories.

Total mobile market shares

According to the statistical report of the Office of the Commissioner for Electronic Communications and Postal Regulation (OCECPR), the increases in market shares for Cyta and Primetel are marginal, with Cablenet recording a double-digit percentage for the first time.

Cyta remains at the top, with a percentage of 49.9% in the first half of 2024 from 49.6% in the second half of 2023 and 49.8% in the first half of 2023.

According to OCECPR 's interpretation of the data, Epic shows a decrease in its overall market share compared to 2023, possibly due to the loss of prepaid users and contract subscribers.

However, it holds steady in second place, with 28.8% in June 2024 compared to 29.9% in December 2023 and 31% in June 2023.

Marginal growth is noted by Primetel, with a market share of 10.8% in the first half of 2024 compared to 10.7% in the second half of 2023 and 11.1% in the first half of 2023.

Slightly further behind is Cablenet, with a market share of 10.5% in June 2024 compared to 9.9% in December 2023 and 8.1% last June.

Contract subscribers

In terms of mobile telephony contract subscribers, Cyta recorded a marginal increase and first place, with a share of 51.9% in June 2024 against 51.8% in December 2023, while in relation to June 2023 (52.1%) a negligible decrease of 0.2% is observed.

Epic remains in second place with a market share of 28.6% in the first half of 2024 compared to 29.3% in the second half of 2023 and 30.1% in the first half of 2023, according to OCECPR data.

In third place is Cablenet, which shows an increase of 0.6% compared to the last half-year, continuing its double-digit rate, which stood at 10.7% in June this year from 10.1% in December 2023 and 8 .7% in June 2023.

This increase, according to OCECPR, may be due to Cablenet's targeted offers.

A slight decrease was noted by Primetel, which has a market share of 8.7% from 8.8% last December and 9.1% in June 2023.

Prepaid mobile

Among prepaid mobile users, Cablenet, Cyta and Primetel are gaining, while Epic's market share is slipping.

Specifically, Cyta remains in first place, with a percentage of 44.8% in the first half of 2024 compared to 44.5% in the second half of 2023 and 44.8% in the first half of 2023.

The decline in Epic's market shares was felt, which stood at 29.3% this June from 31.2% last December and 33% last June.
