Press Release 09:57 - 26 September 2024
DP World Limassol held an event, on the occasion of the DP World Global Safety Day aimed at emphasising the importance of working safely together whilst raising awareness about the importance of safety in the maritime and port operations industry.
The event, held on 25 September 2024, at DP World Limassol’s cruise terminal, was attended by company staff, representatives of the Cyprus Ports Authority, and other port users and maritime stakeholders.
Kicking off the event, was a lively open-floor discussion about the safety challenges in roll-on/roll-off operations, whilst wide-reaching and interesting discussions on enhancing the port’s safety culture and the importance of identifying and mitigating hazards and risks were also held.
The event also featured safety demonstrations on the safe operation of heavy machinery, safe cargo handling, firefighting equipment handling as well as a full-scale emergency response exercise.
Moreover, a number of activity zones were set up, which participants could visit throughout the day. These included information on safe handling and carrying, a hydration and heat stress awareness booth, a workshop on the proper use of personal protective equipment including the chance to feel what it is like to hang in a harness, a demonstration on electrical safety and a demonstration and participation in Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR). The company also set up a special box where participants could submit their questions and ideas on Health & Safety.
DP World’s CEO Simon Pitout said in statements after the event: “The company’s commitment to bolstering the maritime sector’s safety culture and maintaining a safe and healthy workplace at the Port was on full display today. We hope that the participants left the event even more confident about being both proactive in health and safety matters, as well as reactive in handling potential accidents and injuries.”
“I would like to thank all speakers and moderators, as well as those who honoured us with their presence. Let’s hope that together we can change the face of health and safety in Cyprus’ maritime industry”, he added.
