There must be no ambiguity on the electricity interconnection, President says

The government's intention is that there will be no ambiguity as regards electricity interconnection between Cyprus and Greece, President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides has said, following the government's decision to hold a meeting of all parties involved in the issue, in Cyprus, on Tuesday, 10 September.

In statements to the media on 5 September, the President said that "as a government we are solely accountable to the Cypriot people and any decision we take will primarily serve the interests of the Cypriot people."

He added that, taking into account what happened in the past as regards major projects in the country, "we will do everything possible to ensure that there is not the slightest doubt about any issue concerning this strategically important project". It is for this reason, he added, "that we took the initiative to hold this meeting in Nicosia, in the presence of everyone, to address every last detail.".

President Christodoulides reiterated that "we are here to serve the interests of the Cypriot people, we are accountable to the Cypriot people and especially in such major projects there is no possibility or intention on our part to have any ambiguity".

He expressed his hope that the meeting will lead to such results "that will lead us to a decision that will serve the interests of the Cypriot people".

Earlier on 5 September, Government Spokesman, Kontantinos Letymbiotis said in a written statement that a meeting of all stakeholders will be held in Cyprus on Tuesday, 10 September, for the Cyprus-Greece electricity interconnection.

The meeting will be attended by the Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, the Minister of Finance, the Deputy Minister to the President, and the Law Office on behalf of the Republic of Cyprus and the Minister of Energy on behalf of the Greek government, with a representative of the European Commission, and representatives of the Greek Independent Power Transmission Operator - IPTO (ADMIE) and NEXANS company also joining.
