The €23.9m second phase of the University of Cyprus Campus development is on track

The second part of the development of the University of Cyprus Campus is entering its implementation phase, which includes a series of important projects and is expected to cost 23.9 million euros plus VAT.
The University of Cyprus recently announced an open tender through the Electronic Tender System of the General Accounting Office for the selection of the contractor who will undertake the design, execution and maintenance of the infrastructure projects included in the second phase and which will be constructed within the University of Cyprus Campus, which is located in the Nicosia district in the Aglantzia area and falls within the special Urban Planning Zone Aa1.
According to the tender documents, the project that will be studied, executed and maintained concerns the infrastructure projects Phase B on the University Campus and includes the two sections below:
- The completion and adaptation of the University Campus road network
- The creation of the Campus Park
Section A (completion and adaptation of the University Campus road network) includes -in summary-, but is not limited to, the following:
- The new southern ring road network (Loop Road) of 1,270 m in length, which includes the southern road, the two vehicular bridges at the two intersections of the road network with the Kalogeros River and the two small sections following the bridges, which will connect to the existing road network.
- In the western part of the existing regional road network and in the Cancer Center area, the double rectangular storm drain will be widened.
- The construction of three new bus stops, including the necessary signage.
- Horizontal and vertical signage throughout the new road network, in accordance with the standards of the Department of Public Works, including digital signage as described in the Employer's Requirements.
- Design and construction of three elevated pedestrian crossings near bus stops.
- In the new road network and where the road network is supplemented or modified, all electrical and mechanical works will be carried out, which are briefly described below.

Campus Park
Section B (creation of the Campus Park) includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- The formation of the park, which extends between the existing service road and the Kalogeros River in one direction and from the western boundary of the Campus to the pedestrian walkway of the Central Axis, inclusive, in the other direction. Extensive landscaping, planting and irrigation of the green spaces will be implemented in the park and the planting will include: trees, shrubs, ground covers, aquatic plants, aromatics, etc.
- The construction of a new lake, which will include an island with two pedestrian bridges. The new lake will be connected to both the existing lake and the Kalogeros River by the construction of an open channel and the necessary spillways. The construction of the two pedestrian bridges crossing the lake will be wooden.
- The construction of networks of bicycle paths and pedestrian paths throughout the park.
- The construction of small bridges over the existing embankment within the park as well as over the channel connecting the new lake with the river, at the points indicated in the plans. The construction of these small bridges will be wooden.
- The construction of a small public service building (kiosk/kiosk), with a refreshment area and a small preparation area with the necessary equipment, storage areas for the refreshment area, sanitary areas, a cleaning area. Service access to the kiosk will be ensured via a service road and will be controlled by installing a system of removable bollards (Drop bollards). The service road will end in a small parking/loading and unloading area.
- The construction of a bicycle parking area.
- The construction of two wooden viewing platforms of the lake.
- The installation of urban equipment that includes: bicycle racks, seating areas (benches), trash and recycling bins.
- The construction of a sidewalk on the central axis which will end at a small plateau before the Kalogeros River. Along the sidewalk, shade canopies with related equipment (benches, etc.) will be constructed.
- The construction of the fencing of the athletics stadium, as well as the formation of the perimeter embankment and the construction of a service road around the perimeter of the stadium.
- Installation of horizontal and vertical signage with the necessary information throughout the park, including digital signage.
- The construction of a new entrance and modifications to the existing temporary parking area east of the central axis of the University Campus, so that it does not overlap the sidewalk of the central axis.
- Construction of three pedestrian bridges that will cross the Kalogeros River and connect the park area with the plot of the future Student Residences. The pedestrian bridges are located as follows: One on the extension of the sidewalk of the central axis, the second on the extension of the sidewalk located northeast of the new lake and the third on the extension of the sidewalk that crosses the new lake. The pedestrian bridges in their extension within the plot of the future student residences will delimit the service zone. The first two pedestrian bridges will also be used for the passage of the pipe networks and therefore will be designed taking into account that the pipes will be installed in a suitable space network, of the pipe rack type at the bottom of the bridge. The construction of these pedestrian bridges will be metal, with a wooden floor and wooden handrails on which hidden lighting will be installed.

Contract duration and value
Also based on the tender documents, interested parties will be able to submit comments, suggestions and observations until 4 February at 3pm, while the Contracting Authority (University of Cyprus) will have to respond to them by 11 February.
Offers will be accepted until 18 February, 2025 at 3pm, while the estimated date of notification of the results of the competition was set at three months from the date of submission of offers.
The contract with the selected contractor is estimated to be signed four months after the date of submission of the tenders and will have a duration of 84 months from the start of project implementation.
Based on the timetable that has been set, the design and execution of the projects included in phase B of the Campus development should be completed within 24 months from the signing of the contract, while the defects liability and maintenance period will last 60 months from the receipt of the project.
As mentioned above, the estimated value of the tender has been set at €23.9 million excluding VAT and interested parties will be required to pay an amount of €500,000 as a participation guarantee one month after the end of the bid validity period.
