City Friends Club and Limassol Municipality seeking volunteers for Polemidia Hill cleanup
14:00 - 30 January 2025
City Friends Club, in collaboration with the Limassol Municipality, is calling for 300 volunteers to help restore Polemidia Hill behind the General Hospital in Limassol.
According to an announcement on the call, the area "has once again been overwhelmed by waste despite previous cleanup efforts."
"This location became a hotspot for illegal dumping because it was one of the closest areas where people could dispose of waste discreetly without facing fines or paying for proper disposal. Although the site was cleaned before, it quickly became polluted again. Now, gates will be installed after this cleanup to prevent further dumping, with City Friends Club receiving exclusive access to maintain the area," the announcement continued.
The Municipality has already removed 30 trucks of bulky waste, it went on to note, "but much more remains. Since heavy machinery could harm the fragile local ecosystem, a coordinated volunteer effort is the only sustainable solution."
The clean up is due to take place on Saturday, 8 February, from 9am-11am. A link to the site can be found here: Google Maps Link
The event schedule is as follows, 9am to 9.20am – Volunteer gathering, briefing, and equipment distribution; 9.20am to 11am– Cleanup; 11am – Group photo; and 11am to 11.30am – Rest and socialising.
Volunteers will be provided with rubbish bags and gloves as well as water, but should take along their own reusable bottle for the water.
The organisers also recommend that volunteers wear comfortable clothes and shoes suitable for the weather. "The area is open, and Cyprus’ winter sun can be strong — hats are recommended," the announcement notes.
"The cleanup is family-friendly and suitable for children and pets," the organisers also point out, inviting people who want to take action beyond the cleanuip and keep Cyprus clean year-round, to download the City Friends Club app to report illegal dumps and waste in the community.
