Nicosia named First Culinary Capital in Europe

Nicosia has become the first city in Europe to join the World Food Travel Association’s Culinary Capitals network.

This recognition establishes Nicosia as a premier destination for food and beverage enthusiasts, securing its place on the global culinary map, the WFTA said on its website.

“Cypriots recognise Nicosia as the cultural and culinary heart of the island,” it said. “While all of Cyprus boasts a rich gastronomic tradition, Nicosia stands out as the epicentre of authentic flavours and unique culinary experiences.”

The association highlights Commandaria, an ancient dessert wine considered the world’s oldest named wine, cherished for its sweetness and deep, rich aroma. “Equally iconic is Halloumi, the famous Cypriot cheese, loved for its versatility and served grilled or fresh, making it a staple in both traditional and modern dishes,” it adds.

The culinary heritage of Nicosia reflects centuries of cultural fusion, blending among others, Greek, Venetian, and Middle Eastern influences. This legacy thrives in local tavernas, bustling markets, and contemporary restaurants that honour traditional recipes while innovating for new generations.

"Nicosia’s recognition as the first Culinary Capital in Europe highlights the city’s unique ability to connect its rich history with the modern traveller’s appetite for authentic experiences," said Theodoros Kringou, Chairman of the Nicosia Tourism Board. "This distinction allows us to share the treasures of Cypriot cuisine and invite visitors to explore our culture through the unforgettable flavours of our city."

WFTA’s Executive Director and Founder Erik Wolf remarked, "Cyprus has long been a hidden gem for food and wine lovers, and Nicosia is its beating heart. We are proud to collaborate with this extraordinary city to spotlight its remarkable culinary heritage on a global stage".

Nicosia now joins the prestigious Culinary Capitals network alongside other distinguished destinations.
