President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides will receive United Nations Under Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Rosemary DiCarlo on Monday, 10 February.
It is recalled that UN Secretary-General's Deputy Spokesperson, Farhan Haq, said last week during the press briefing at the UN headquarters, that DiCarlo, would travel to Cyprus over the weekend and that on 10 February, she will meet with the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders, Nikos Christodoulides and Ersin Tatar, respectively.
"They will discuss the way forward on the Cyprus issue in preparation of an informal meeting in a broader format. In addition, DiCarlo will be focusing on the work of the Secretary-General’s good offices mission and meeting with representatives of civil society, including youth and women’s groups,” he added.
Moreover he said that following her visit to Cyprus, she will hold meetings in Athens, Greece, on 12 February and Ankara, Turkey, on 13 February, "for discussions on the Cyprus issue, as well as other key regional and global developments.”
Earlier on 10 February, at 10.30am, she will meet with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar.
Sources told CNA in the afternoon of 10 Februart, DiCarlo will meet with the Cyprus Women Bi-Communal Coalition at Ledra Palace, in the Nicosia buffer zone.
In statements last week, President Christodoulides expressed his readiness to attend a joint meeting with DiCarlo and the Turkish Cypriot leader.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
