Deputy Minister of Digital Policy in Paris for the AI Action Summit

The Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy, Dr. Nicodemos Damianou, is in France to represent President Nikos Christodoulides, at the AI Action Summit, being held in Paris on 10 and 11 February.

According to an announcement from the Deputy Ministry, this high-level conference brings together heads of state and government, senior officials from over 90 countries, leaders of international organisations, top executives from the world’s largest technology companies, as well as representatives from academia, civil society, and non-governmental organisations.

The discussions will focus on the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) and the need for enhanced international cooperation to ensure AI is safe, reliable, and accessible for the benefit of humanity. Specifically, the key discussion points will include:

  1. Ensuring broad access to independent, secure, and trustworthy AI.
  2. Promoting environmentally friendly AI development.
  3. Establishing an effective and inclusive global AI governance framework.

According to the French Presidency, "The summit will reflect a balanced European approach to AI, combining innovation support, appropriate regulation, and respect for rights, ensuring that AI development benefits all, including developing countries."

Cyprus is an active participant in this global initiative, which aims to address the challenges and harness the opportunities arising from the rapid evolution of AI worldwide. As part of this effort, Cyprus recently established a Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence (AI Taskforce) to promote AI development, integration, and broader, more effective utilisation. The goal is to enhance economic growth, maintain competitiveness, and improve the quality of life for citizens.

During his visit, the Deputy Minister will also participate in a Ministerial Working Meeting with EU member state ministers, attended by European Commissioner for Technological Independence, Security, and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen.

Following the AI Action Summit, the Deputy Minister will travel to Dubai to attend the 'World Government Summit', which will take place from 11-13 February.
