House President and Commissioner Kadis stress need to protect Cyprus' seas

The need to protect the Cyprus' seas has been highlighted by the President of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, and the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis.

The two met at the House of Representatives on the morning of 14 February.

Kadis requested Demetriou's contribution in the ratification of international agreements for the protection of the seas, with the House President assuring him that he would have it.

In statements before the meeting, Annita Demetriou described the assignment of the Fisheries and Oceans portfolio to Kadis as a success for Cyprus and for Europe. She pointed out that this portfolio is in line “with the goals that we have set as the Republic of Cyprus and the European Union as well”.

She also said that “we will support initiatives and policies that we so need, especially Cyprus,” a country “surrounded by sea, which we must protect”. She further pointed out that “we must find ways as soon as possible to move forward with the green transition, which is so important”.

On his part, Costas Kadis said that “the preservation of a sustainable sector, fisheries, is very high on our priorities, as well as the proper management of our precious seas, which are a source of life, enabling us to support our coastal areas in particular”. He also expressed his will to manage all issues based on the principles of sustainability, adding that “the Cypriot Parliament, like all parliaments, has a role”.

Additionally, the European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans informed the President of the Parliament that he was going to inform her about international agreements, which should be ratified in the context of the protection of the Cypriot seas, noting that “your contribution is also needed here”. Finally, Demetriou assured Kadis that he would have her contribution.
