Cyprus and US officials discuss migration challenges

The challenges Cyprus and the US face in the field of migration were examined during a meeting in Washington between Deputy Minister of Migration and International Protection Dr. Nicholas A. Ioannides and Republican Congressman Mike Lawler.

In a post on “X”, Dr. Ioannides described the meeting with Lawler, member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and Chair of the Subcommittee for the Middle East & North Africa as “excellent.”

“We reviewed the state-of-play of the very close cooperation between and in the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus’ crucial role as a regional anchor, aiming together with like-minded partners at solidifying conditions of stability,” he noted.

He also said that they “exchanged views on issues of common interest and concern, as well as the complex migratory challenges both and face in their regional environments” and added that “we look forward to welcoming him to Cyprus in the near future to continue our discussions.”

In a post on Instagram and X, Lawler said he met with  officials from Cyprus, including Ambassador Evangelos Savva (pictured below on the right of Ioannides and the Congressman), “to discuss U.S.-Cyprus ties, migration, and regional security.”

He said “Cyprus is a key Eastern Mediterranean partner,” and that he looks forward to strengthening the two countries’ partnership.
