Cyprus to open its first crematorium, 10 years after legislation passed

Golden Leaves Cyprus Crematorium Limited has announced some updates regarding the construction and operation of the first crematorium in Cyprus, which is expected to open in Agia Varvara in Paphos, in the summer of 2026.

Marking a milestone for Cyprus by combining respect, environmental awareness, and economic practicality, the establishment of the crematorium provides an alternative option for those who do not wish to proceed with a traditional burial ceremony. It is worth noting that the law permitting cremation in Cyprus was passed in April 2016. The implementation of this project—which has already received approval from the Environmental Authority—is backed by the expertise of the company, part of the group of Golden Leaves Ltd, which was founded in 1984 and has extensive experience in the wider funeral sector.

This project sets new standards for funeral services in Cyprus by adopting modern technologies, offering comprehensive services, and emphasising transparency and public awareness. The facility will cover a site area approximately 17,575m², with a building area of 1,012m², and is expected to cost around €4 million to construct.

The crematorium will provide complete cremation services, with the base cost estimated at around €900, excluding funeral home fees and additional services. It will be accessible to all funeral homes and operate transparently and professionally, catering to individuals choosing cremation.

A place of comfort and serenity

Beautifully designed service chapels will be available for all religious denominations and mourners, ensuring families have a respectful and dignified space to say their farewells. The grounds will offer a calm and serene setting for the bereaved to visit their dearly departed, with various memorial options, including columbaria and peaceful olive tree groves.

Maureen Watt, Director of Golden Leaves Cyprus Crematorium Limited, stated: "We are proud to bring the first crematorium to Cyprus, offering a modern, regulated, and environmentally sustainable solution for those who prefer cremation over burial. Our goal is not to replace traditions but to provide an additional choice for those who wish to be cremated. We understand this is a new, unfamiliar concept for many that may challenge their beliefs and perceptions. That is why we are committed to providing full information, transparency, and security."

The facility will have two floors (ground and basement) with an area of approximately 1,012 square meters. The ground floor will house the main reception area, offices, a kitchen, restrooms, and two service chapels with a flexible capacity of 100-200 seats, there will also be wake facilities made available. The basement will include a preparation room and refrigeration for the deceased, an ashes chapel, two cremators and abatement system, and additional parking spaces, supplementing the 30 outdoor parking spaces.

How will the crematorium operate?

The crematorium will adopt a modern European cremation system, which has been tested for over a decade and installed in throughout Europe and the UK. This system includes:

● Minimal Emissions: The latest, most efficient, environmentally friendly cremation equipment will ensure minimal emissions and seamless compliance with European regulations. The system includes low-emission technology and filtration systems such as bag filters, chemical treatment with baking soda, and activated carbon filters.

● Continuous Monitoring: Sensors will track temperature, carbon monoxide levels, oxygen levels, and airborne particles to ensure emissions remain well below legal limits.

● Eco-Friendly Management Options: The crematorium will offer biodegradable urns and other environmentally sustainable choices.

The facility will also incorporate advanced solar technology, ensuring the service chapels, offices, AC, and refrigeration operate efficiently with minimal energy consumption. Additionally, rainwater harvesting systems will be implemented to keep the memorial gardens well-watered throughout the summer months, further enhancing the natural beauty of the grounds.

Commitment to the local community

Golden Leaves Cyprus Crematorium Limited is deeply committed to supporting the local economy and preserving the island’s identity. Thus, the entire construction will utilize local materials, ensuring that its foundations and walls reflect the essence of Cyprus. Moreover, most construction specialists and craftsmen working on this project are based in Cyprus, reinforcing the commitment to local expertise.

Golden Leaves have selected the award-winning international crematorium design specialists, Benchmark Architects from the UK and their locally respected partner Vefeades & Vefeades architects of Nicosia, to bring this vision to life. Their experience and dedication to designing respectful and serene spaces will ensure the crematorium provides a fitting final farewell for those who choose cremation.

Addressing a growing need

The crematorium addresses significant and practical needs in Cypriot society. By implementing modern technologies, the project helps reduce environmental impact and supports the local economy by decreasing dependence on imported services. Until now, individuals seeking cremation had to travel abroad, incurring significant expenses and logistical challenges. Additionally, given the limited burial space in Cyprus and the rising costs of traditional funerals, cremation offers a financially and practically viable alternative. It is also a convenient option for the growing number of expatriates living on the island who will now be able to be cremated locally and have their ashes repatriated if desired.

To ensure the public is well-informed about the cremation process, the crematorium will host public informational sessions where citizens can learn more about the facility’s operations, environmental standards, and the benefits of cremation as an end-of-life option. This approach aims to promote transparency and reassure the public, addressing any possible concerns arising from cultural or religious beliefs.
