Deputy Ministry calls on society to embrace 'Digital Citizen' app

The Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy has called on society to embrance the new “Digital Citizen” application.

In an announcement, the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation, and Digital Policy informed organisations, companies, and professionals that the 'Digital Citizen' application is the official mobile application of the Government, allowing citizens of the Republic who hold a CY Login account to store their digital public documents on their mobile devices.

In its initial phase, the application supports the creation of digital copies of the Identity Card, Driver’s License, and Vehicle Roadworthiness Certificate (MOT). Additional documents and functionalities will be introduced in 2025, including integration with the Gov.Gr Wallet application to enable mutual recognition of digital documents between the two countries.

"It is important to note that the digital versions of public documents issued via the 'Digital Citizen' application are legally equivalent to their physical counterparts for all lawful uses within the Republic of Cyprus. Therefore, individuals can present the digital document via the application during identity verification, authentication, or driver’s license checks instead of the physical document, and this must be accepted without exceptions," the announcement pointed out.

It continued, "Consequently, all organisations are required to accept the digital format of documents presented via the 'Digital Citizen' application in all face-to-face transactions with citizens. Refusal to accept these digital documents is equivalent to rejecting their physical versions."

The Deputy Ministry then urged all organisations to take the necessary steps to facilitate the acceptance of digital citizen documents through the 'Digital Citizen' application.

Regarding the verification process, the authenticity of digital documents can be confirmed directly through the 'Digital Citizen' application without the need for any additional devices. The verifying officer only needs to have the application installed on a mobile device, with no requirement for CY Login authentication.

Further information about the application is available at https://www.digital-citizen.gov.cy
