The main shareholder of Greece's Attica Bank wants former Central Bank of Cyprus Govenor Constantinos Herodotou to be appointed as Chairman of the bank's Board of Directors, the Greek press has reported.
As reported by Greek media, this would a particularly important development for the bank, as Constantinou is senior executive of international standing and has extensive banking experience and so would help the bank strengthen its corporate governance and become more outward-looking.
The publications also noted that, Constantinos Herodotou has excellent relations with the ECB Banking Supervision - SSM and other European institutions, which he combines with experience from the private sector and significant knowledge of supervisory issues.
More specifically, they noted that he served as Governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus from 2019 to 2024, as well as being a member of the General Council of the ECB.
At the helm of the Central Bank of Cyprus, he successfully handled demanding situations, such as the management of NPLs, the protection of the banking system from the bankruptcy of third-country banks operating in Cyprus, while working to strengthen the credibility of the Cypriot banking system and attract capital from abroad.
Previously, among other things, Herodotou had served as the Commissioner of Privatisations in Cyprus, organising the relevant programme of the Republic of Cyprus, as well as a senior executive at UBS Investment Bank in London, for a number of years, where he supported major business transactions.
