Greece-Cyprus energy talks to advance Great Sea Interconnector project

A key meeting between Cyprus' Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, George Papanastasiou, and Greece’s Minister of Environment and Energy, Theo Skylakakis, took place today in Athens, focusing on the Great Sea Interconnector—the ambitious electricity link between Greece and Cyprus.

Progress in energy cooperation

Following the meeting, both ministers described the discussions as productive and constructive, emphasising the importance of the electrical interconnection project for both countries.

A key development was Skylakakis officially handing over Greece’s response letter to Papanastasiou, addressing Cyprus’ concerns outlined in a letter dated December 3, 2024. The letter provides Athens’ official position on the interconnection project, paving the way for the next steps.

Next steps for the Great Sea Interconnector

Papanastasiou highlighted the significance of the meeting, stating that the Greek response will be thoroughly reviewed before Cyprus makes a public statement.

“I believe this letter addresses all of Cyprus' concerns. With this clarification from Greece, we can now move forward with the next steps,” he said.

Skylakakis also emphasised the strong cooperation between the two sides, adding that he had additionally provided ADMIE's (Greece's Independent Power Transmission Operator) response regarding various technical and logistical aspects of the project.

“We had a warm and positive meeting, as always. I believe we have responded in a satisfactory manner to the key concerns raised, within the framework of our excellent cooperation in recent months,” he said.

Regional energy integration on track

The Great Sea Interconnector is a landmark project aimed at strengthening energy security in the region by linking the electricity grids of Greece, Cyprus, and eventually Israel. Today's discussions mark an important step toward finalising agreements and moving forward with implementation.
