Romania has become a key tourist market for Cyprus, recording a 120% increase in two years, said Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis, as her announced a decision by Romanian airline Animawings to launch flights to Cyprus for the first time.
In a press release, the Deputy Minister met with Animawings Chairman Marius Pandel, Orthodoxou Aviation Director Antonis Orthodoxou, and other officials this week to discuss cooperation opportunities and the expansion of air connections between Cyprus and Romania.
Pandel informed Koumis that, following previous discussions with the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, Animawings plans to operate three weekly flights from Bucharest to Larnaca in 2025. By 2026, the airline intends to add more flights from other Romanian cities.
During the meeting, Koumis stressed the importance of further strengthening the Romanian market and welcomed the airline’s decision to launch direct flights to Cyprus.
He said that 95,000 Romanian tourists visited Cyprus in 2024, compared to 80,000 in 2023 and 43,000 in 2022.
Koumis described Romania as a highly promising market in which Cyprus continues to invest.
"The size of the country as a source of tourists, combined with the country's steady economic growth, can have a beneficial impact on Cyprus' tourism sector," he said.
He added that the 120% increase in arrivals from Romania during a period of two years is expected to continue in 2024.
"We welcome Animawings’ decision to start flights to Cyprus, as we do with all new airline routes, as well as the expansion of existing flight schedules," Koumis noted.
He stressed that improving air connectivity with Romania was a priority for 2025.
