The recipients of RIF's Cyprus Research Awards (pics)

The Research and Innovation Foundation's (RIF) Cyprus Research Awards have highlighted, for yet another year, the importance of innovation and scientific excellence.
This year's ceremony, which took place at the Nicosia Municipal Theatre, was held with great success on 26 March.
Through this institution, which has now been established as a point of reference for the Cypriot scientific community, the RIF honoured six distinguished researchers from the country, recognising their contribution to research and the creation of pioneering work.
More specifically:
- Georgios Georgiou was awarded the “Cyprus Research Award – Distinguished Researcher in the thematic unit of Natural Sciences and Engineering”. An outstanding researcher and pioneer in the study of photovoltaic energy, George Georgiou is distinguished for the quality of his research work, ranking him among the leading multidisciplinary scientists in a highly competitive field.

- Jean Sciare was awarded the “Cyprus Research Award – Distinguished Researcher in the thematic area of Natural Sciences and Engineering”. Professor Sciare exemplifies exceptional scientific quality, leadership skills and a strong commitment to innovation and social impact, making him a prominent figure in the global scientific community.

- Simone Bacchio was awarded the “Cyprus Research Award - Young Researcher in the thematic area of Physical Sciences and Engineering”. An extremely promising scientist, Simone Bacchio combines physics and applied mathematics, forming an interdisciplinary profile. His scientific work reflects his passion and high dedication to research.

- Dr. Evelina Charidemou was selected and awarded the "Cyprus Research Award - Young Researcher in the Life Sciences thematic unit" at the Cyprus Research Awards of the IDF. Dr. Charidemou, a young and promising scientist with high-profile publications, is active in the research field of the interaction of metabolism and epigenetics, with a focus on liver diseases and diabetic retinopathy.

- Dr. Penelope Constantinou was nominated and awarded the “ Cyprus Research Award - Young Researcher in Social Sciences” at the Cyprus Research Awards of the Cyprus Research Foundation. She is active in the research field of social sciences, with a specialization in clinical psychology. Dr. Constantinou’s research work focuses on the use of technologies in the better management and treatment of various health problems. Her scientific work reflects her high level of expertise and dedication.

- Dr. Irene Sargiannidou and the team of the Department of Neurosciences of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics were recognized and secured the “ Cyprus Research Award – Commercial Exploitation of Research Results” at the Cyprus Research Awards of the Cyprus Research Foundation. Dr. Sargiannidou, and the entire team of the Department of Neurosciences of the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics led by the Mentor and Director of the Department Dr. Cleopas Cleopas, have demonstrated successful commercial exploitation of their research results. Their research focuses on the development of gene therapies for peripheral hereditary neuropathies, known as Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT).
