British Minister of State for Europe and North America, Stephen Doughty, is in Cyprus to hold a series of meetings with both sides of the divide ahead of an informal expanded meeting on the Cyprus issue that will take place in Geneva on March 17 and 18.
He is scheduled to meet with President Nikos Christodoulides at the Presidential Palace and with Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar in the Turkish occupied areas of the island.
Doughty will also be meeting with Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna, House President and DISY party President Annita Demetriou, and AKEL party General Secretary Stefanos Stefanou. He is also expected to meet in the occupied areas with the leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), Tufan Erhurman.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric announced during a news conference that UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres "will convene the two Cypriot leaders and the guarantor of powers of Greece, Turkey and the United Kingdom, for an informal meeting on Cyprus at the UN Office in Geneva, and that will take place on the 17th to the 18th of March". Saying the meeting would be held in line with the UN office's "efforts on the Cyprus issue”, Dujarric added that "the informal meeting will provide an opportunity for meaningful discussion on the way forward."
