AUB Mediterraneo hosts international conference on digitalising cultural heritage (pics)

American University of Beirut (AUG) Mediterraneo hosted the International Conference on the Digitalisation of Cultural Heritage in Paphos this week.

Described as “a one-day gathering at the crossroads of technology, history, and identity” and funded by DAAD German Academic Exchange Service, the conference was held in collaboration with Brandenburg University of Applied Sciences and UNESCO.

Posting about the event on its social media, AUB Mediterraneo said the initiative brought together efforts to digitise and reconstruct endangered cultural sites across Lebanon, Iraq, Jordan, Oman, Sudan, Cyprus, and beyond.

With keynote insights from UNESCO, the Cypriot Deputy Ministry of Culture, and international experts, the conference welcomed 100+ participants, showcased 21 student-led digital heritage projects, and sparked meaningful dialogue on virtual storytelling, digital twins, and the future of cultural preservation, the university said.

“From VR monasteries to gamified museums, the past is being re-imagined digitally, accessibly, and globally,” it said, before adding: “A heartfelt thank you to everyone who helped bring this vision to life!”
