Kyriakos Iordanou: The need for a resilient economic model for Cyprus amid global crises

“There will be collateral effects if the trade crisis is prolonged,” warned Kyriakos Iordanou, General Manager of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Cyprus (ICPAC), in his speech during the 15th Nicosia Economic Forum.

According to Iordanou, the current trade war is reminiscent of earlier times, as there is now a noticeable trend toward a return to the dominance of national currencies and the re-consolidation of productive capacity within the borders of individual countries.

He further noted that the global political landscape is being significantly impacted, with the US provoking China and vice versa.

Iordanou also pointed out that traditional alliances may come into opposition, stating: “The geopolitical environment is changing rapidly, and more and more countries are focusing on defence and security issues.”

Iordanou stressed that given the unstable international climate, there is an urgent need for a stable and resilient economic model for Cyprus. He highlighted the importance of building strong relationships with third countries, addressing climate change, advancing the ESG agenda, and implementing tax reforms—issues he deemed highly significant.

He called for collective action and a focus on the resilience of the Cypriot economy, adding that the perspectives of young people and future business leaders can contribute meaningfully in this direction.

15th Nicosia Economic Congress

Now in its 15th year, the Nicosia Economic Congress is organised with the goal of outlining the current state of the Cypriot economy and highlighting its future prospects.

It stands as one of the country’s most important gatherings, where high-level executives from Cypriot businesses, entrepreneurs, economists, academics, ministers, and key government officials have the opportunity to be informed, raise questions, and share their views and proposals on Cyprus’s most pressing economic issues.
