“Progress is not just about breaking barriers – it’s also about making sure no one is left behind,” declared the Honorary Consul of the Philippines in Cyprus, Charmagne Garcia-Laconico, at the 69th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW69) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Speaking on “The Role of Empathy in Empowerment in the Digital Age”, Garcia-Laconico highlighted how empathy-driven leadership transforms workplaces and communities. She shared how mentorship programs and inclusive policies have helped women in Cyprus enter leadership roles and close the gender gap in tech. Referencing a McKinsey & Company report, she noted that diverse teams consistently drive greater success, while research from Deloitte underscores that empathy and collaboration are essential qualities in an AI-driven workforce.

“In today's world, where technology is evolving at an unprecedented pace, it is the human connection – our ability to empathize, support, and lead with kindness – that truly drives progress,” she said. “While innovation shapes how we work and live, empathy defines how far we go as a society.” The honorary consul also emphasized the need for digital literacy and leadership programs to equip women with the skills to thrive in the evolving workplace, pointing to the success of women-led startups in Southeast Asia as proof of what’s possible.
She stressed that empowerment is a shared responsibility, calling for men to be active allies in championing gender equality. “Every word of encouragement, every opportunity shared, and every act of mentorship creates a ripple effect,” she said.

Garcia-Laconico closed with a call to action: invest in mentorship, promote inclusivity, and build spaces where women are seen, heard, and celebrated. “When we empower each other, we don’t just change lives – we change the world.”
